Canadian Apprenticeship Programs

You could go to work at some company as a general laborer then after a year or so, they'll put you into the apprenticeship program where you continue to work but every year depending on the trade, take about six weeks of fulltime classes then go back to work.

You could immediately go to vocational school, get a certificate then go to work in the field as an apprentice.

Provincial governments have the responsibility to train and certify apprentices.

The Red Seal Program is an attempt to standardize all apprenticeship programs so a graduate in one province can work in any other province.

red-seal.ca

servicecanada.gc.ca

Most apprencticeship programs are a mix of classroom work and on-the-job training/ OJT. Some are all OJT with no classroom work. You learn the entire trade on the job and then you either take some licensing test or just work, your employability dependent on how well you do the job.

To find an apprenticeship in your field, try the following formulas in a search engine:

(your field) apprenticeship program, (your state, city or province)

(your field) internship program, (your state, city or province)

Find apprenticeship programs at your local vocational school.

The Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship

The (CCDA) is responsible for the management of the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program. The CCDA works with industry to develop a skilled labour force and facilitate labour mobility throughout Canada. This is achieved by: developing, implementing and recognizing Red Seal trades and credentials; promoting high standards in occupational training; fostering harmonization in training among jurisdictions; and increasing public awareness of apprenticeship training and certification.

If you are a tradesperson, you are encouraged to contact your local apprenticeship office for information on training and certification.
