Homeschool Guide

The "People Power" Education Superbook

Don't buy into anyone's system. Create your own. This is the way life should be lived in an ideal world.

Home schooling is becoming more popular as many parents become disillusioned with public schooling and want to develop closer relationships with their children during the formative years.

The mainstay of the movement seems to be Christian parents who don't like the secular/ humanistic curriculum and the so-called worldly influences of other children in public schools, hence, they choose to educate them on their own with Christian values.

The other thrust seems to be that the public school system simply fails in its obligation to churn out well-educated children ready for the competitive real world.

The home schooling movement, arguably started by John Holt in the 1970s, is based upon the idea that children learn better by themselves following their own natural interests.

Home schooling is legal in the United States. Some states require no notification or monitoring of any kind while others have standards and tests.

See state laws at the Home School Legal Defense Association, hslda.org.

The problem with home schooling could be the lack of socializing but all you have to do is sign the kid up for sports, music clubs, etc. You can start a homeschool social club.

For some parents, the idea sounds good at the outset but after a few weeks of one-on-one contact with the child several hours a day, it becomes clear that it's hard work and takes dedication if you want to educate your child properly.

It's a hands-on job. You have to be there with the child coaching him when he encounters things he doesn't like or understand like math concepts.

That means that you have to learn or relearn all those obscure things yourself in order to teach them to your child unless he or she is a super self-learner.

Do you remember all that seemingly stupid stuff that you never ever used after you wrote the test for them like quadratic equations, sine, cosine, factoring, the Pythagoras theorem, etc.?

Are you willing to go over all that stuff again just to teach it to your child and unless he plans to become an engineer or an architect, it's totally useless to him?

You could hire a tutor for those subjects, for example, get a graduate math major at a local college.

Some churches have programs for home schoolers to help out with the rough spots like math. The internet offers home schooling courses that the child can go through on his own time.

If your child/ children are somewhat gifted and creative, home schooling may be the best way to help them fully explore and develop their abilities without being constrained by a classroom with a generic curriculum simply because they can do most of the learning on their own own.

When I was a kid, a friend of mine had hippie type parents who took him out of school after grade six and he learned on his own just fine. He wrote the SATs, got a good score and went to college.

You must be a ship with a course. In other words, you just can't be artsy about it and do whatever you feel on a whim. It would be nice to educate your child totally based on your and his likes and dislikes but the reality is that there are nuts and bolts things a child has to do in order to build a foundation, i.e. grammar, spelling, reading comprehension, multiplication tables, etc.

Get curriculum guidelines either from your local schoolboard or from some of the home schooling guides out there like the Christian ones and set up a realistic organized schedule.

You can probably find everything you need at the local library. Ask them about any literacy/ reading programs they might have.

In my opinion, command of the language is the most important skill for any educated person. Math is basically useless for all but people entering technical fields because we have calculators to do all the work for us.

These are the main pros and cons of home schooling not to mention that it will cost you a few bucks for educational materials although some schoolboards provide free books and some teaching aids to some home schoolers.

If you get good at it, you could parlay it into a job and teach other kids, particularly if you have a religious bent to your lessons. You could also help so-called slow children catch up. Others have done it. You might want to start a local home schooling support group.

Some of the Christian churches in your area might offer an alternative school or books for home schooling.

Testing is a skill in and of itself. It is part of life in the real world, hence, you should give your child tests in order to teach him the art of taking tests. The child will have to take tests at some point in time, at the very least, SATs in order to qualify for college.

Independent types of children take to home schooling well but most children get lonely and bored with it at some point in time. They need to be around other kids to have friends, do things and develop socially. If the child decides to re-enter school at some point in time, he may have to take a test to determine and verify his grade level.

If you're home schooling your child, you must have some outlet for him to be with other kids, something like swimming lessons, boy scouts, etc.

In some communities, several dozen parents have come together to start their own school. It was cheaper than sending their children to private school. In one community, the parents got together, got elected to the schoolboard then set money aside for an alternative school.

There should be a Home Schooling Coordinator in your local schoolboard.

There's a backlash to home schooling by some husbands who complain they give their wives money, they buy cheap home schooling materials for their kids and keep the rest for themselves.

Many mothers barely spend any time with their kids and go to other women's houses to supposedly home school their kids but all they do is gossip while the kids play frivolous games.

It's very easy to hire an intellectual high school or college student to tutor your child a few hours a week.

One family said the World Almanac had enough info for the whole curriculum. Buy it in paperbook for a few bucks at a new books bookstore or buy last year's copy at a used bookstore for even less.

There are home schooling books at #371.02-

#371.042 or LC40 at your library. Look under Alternative Education or Alternative Schooling.

There are other schooling books in the entire #370-379 section and also in the #649.68 sections of your library. Many universities offer correspondence courses.
