Vocational Trades/ People Who Work With Their Hands
The term vocational conjures up an image of some semi-stupid, unkempt kind of guy who was too dumb to go to college (at least it did when I went to school) which is why I notice that it's being phased out in favor of the terms career education and technical education.
Just as I warned you about college through my writings, I'm warning you the same about vocational trades. Don't go to a non- accredited vocational school which exists to make money from your tuition then gives you a diploma that's useless to get a job.
Another thing to be wary about is your choice of trade. A friend of mine spent two years taking an electronic technician course then couldn't find a job. After about a year, he forget it all so he was useless at interviews.
In some areas, there's an overabundance of carpenters in the carpenter's union and another carpentry graduate out of vocational school will not find a job.
You have to go where the jobs are like Vegas, Orlando or Branson.
Start your search looking under Trades and Vocational in your local phonebook. Most cities have a government funded vocational school and several private for specific trades like truck driving, cooking, hair stylist, etc.
Many trades are a combination apprenticeship and school meaning you get in somewhere with a laborer job as something like an electrician's helper or bricklayer's helper, work it for awhile, your boss likes you and puts you into the union managed apprentice program which means you work on the job learning the trade then spend a few weeks in the classroom every year for several years afterwhich you take a test and become a journeyman.
Many private trade schools are business schools, offering programs such as secretarial science, business administration, accounting,
data processing, court reporting, paralegal studies, fashion merchandising, travel and tourism, culinary arts, drafting and electronics.
By protections passed by the Federal Trade Commission, if you quit vocational school within 14 days of signing your enrollment
agreement, you're entitled to a full refund.
If you quit at any time thereafter, they must give you a partial refund and charge you only for the lessons you have completed. This rule applies to all vocational schools including those that offer correspondence courses.
Instruction excluded from this is high school
equivalency courses, non-credit self interest
courses and standard college courses. Schools which fail to comply could be charged a hefty fine.
By these rules, if a school makes a claim about how high a percentage of their graduates get jobs or how much salary they make, they have to provide you with their actual surveys or statistics and if they don't, you can sue them for misleading advertising.
Vocational School Basics
A vocational school, trade school or career school is a school where students learn an occupational skill to be able to do a job that will earn them money.
Vocational schools are not interested in the liberal arts educational philosophy of character development. They are focussed on practical job and life skills only.
The term 'college" used to mean a school where you went to learn a specific skill like a teacher's college or journalist college. Many colleges are a part of a university which is considered the blanket term for a liberal arts academic school.
The big categories in formal education are:
1.) Academic, university
2.) Vocational/ career skills, fulltime, government run, usually free or very cheap
3.) Community colleges offer both vocational training and the first two years towards a university degree.
4.) University higher-level vocations like engineering and scientist.
5.) Apprenticeships, on-the-job-training combined with some classroom schooling for trades.
6.) Private career schools, for profit
7.) Other trade schools like online or part-time at night
Vocational schools used to be government-run free schools but nowadays many private vocational schools operate for a fee. The value of their education varies widely. Never shell out money to a private career school without first researching it with the bbb.org (type its name in). Find out if people in the field respect the school and its diplomas.
Vocational schools are usually considered post-secondary schools but in some places, you can start training for a trade in grade 10 of high school.
Before you go to any school, check to see if it is accredited by a real goivernment-sanctioned accrediting agency, not a fake one. There are loads of fake accrediting agencies out there. Just make up a name and hook up an important looking website to it.

Blue Collar Jobs/ Blue Collar Careers
Blue collar used to mean jobs that are performed in work clothes and often involve manual labor. A lot of the skilled trades are considered blue collar work like plumbing and electrician but a draftsman is not because he sits at a desk drawing things.
Blue collar means working man. You do something tangible as opposed to doing bureaucratic work. It used to mean jobs like police and mailman but now it means a working man job, anything where you work with your hands, walk around, punch a timeclock, etc.
Based on what I've read, there's a kind of blue collar envy going around because everybody needs a plumber, the mail has to be delivered unlike a lot of bureaucratic, professional jobs and other fancy-assed job titles which are quickly wiped out when hard times hit.
A blue collar job is a safe, steady job because no matter what happens, people always need those basic services.
